Personal Organisers and Funky Pigeons…

From my desk here in Wiltshire, I’m watching some very light snow drift past the window and thinking about tackling the ever increasing pile of paperwork on my desk – which sort of feels like an ideal lockdown activity.  If you’re currently in lockdown, I wonder how you’re choosing to use the extra time?  My friend, colleague and former boss, Jonathan Slatter, has been spending a few happy hours sorting out his audio archive and recently shared a little gem with me from the days I worked for him as an assistant/ scriptwriter/ voiceover/ jingle singer.  We worked hard but we also had a lot of fun, and this ad was the result of one of the sessions where we played around in the studio, improvising scripts and seeing what happened!

The Organiser Shop Radio Ad from the early 90s

Listening to this, it strikes me how much of its time the ad was – now, the idea of a shop devoted to selling personal organisers seems rather quaint… and there are probably a fair few people who don’t know what a personal organiser is!  It got me thinking about the work that I’m doing now that is also very much of its time – this strange, unsettled time.  Happily, one of my recent jobs was about helping people share the love on Valentine’s Day – and that’s ALWAYS a joy…

Wherever you are, I hope you’re keeping well (and warm!) and if you have more time than usual on your hands, I trust you find something rather more fulfilling to do than paperwork!

Take care,

Kate.

PS.  Would you believe that as well as that pesky pile of paperwork, my desk also boasts my personal organiser from the 90’s?!  Used on a pretty regular basis for all my ADdresses…

I wonder whether these Filofaxes will catch on…

The Very Strangest of Times

Well, where do I start? I suppose “How are you?” is as good a place as any. I really hope that you are keeping well in both body and mind during these, the very strangest of times.

Over the past couple of months I have considered myself so lucky to be used to working from home – with much of my time spent in isolation in a voice booth! Change and uncertainty have still been difficult to navigate though and it’s felt like each week has had more ups and downs than a mountain stage of the Tour De France. Of course, I had so many good intentions – filling all the gaps in my professional knowledge by diving into all the brilliant resources available, for one, as well as training my dogs to STOP BARKING AT THE POSTMAN and finally learning how to crochet. Funnily enough, those things haven’t really happened but blimey, I’ve learnt a lot about myself, my family, friends and colleagues! It has been an unexpected joy to feel and see the care in my home and work communities and I do hope you’ve experienced that too.

Another unexpected joy was working on a project that focuses on love, hope and believing. The lovely and highly talented Helen S. Michaelsen has created something very special with her book, The Call of Mektoub, and it’s been a delight to immerse myself in it by voicing one of her characters for the audio book. The first few chapters are being made available online so if you’d like to escape into a rather magical world, here’s the link…

I do hope that you too have found things to nourish and sustain you and, just as importantly, make you smile through life’s recent challenges. Take care of yourself – I shall leave you with just a few more of my favourite lockdown things 🙂
